Ninja is the revolutionary portable field recorder that changes digital video production by empowering professionals with the ability to go straight from camera lens to studio edit timeline!
Produced using cutting edge technology that integrates the Apple ProRes codec in hardware the Ninja streamlines digital video production processes and provides the most elegant, effortless and cost effective file-based workflow available.
The Atomos Ninja is a 10-bit HD field recorder that by-passes in-camera compression to record pristine, uncompressed images straight from the HDMI connector of a DSLR or camcorder directly to Apple ProRes in real-time while recording. With Ninja there is no longer a need for capture cards or I/O boxes as users can use the Ninja field recorder to acquire content straight from a camera lens to their NLE timeline.
Low-Cost, High-Capacity Storage.
Using flash memory (CF, SD, SDHC) may be okay for stills photography but it is just not there yet for serious high-definition video production. The professional alternatives of SxS and P2 are too prohibitively priced to just ‘record and forget’. Atomos' goal was to reduce the cost of recording media so drastically that digital media production could be achieved on a traditional tape-based cost model.
The Ninja uses ordinary, low cost 2.5" Hard Disk Drive (HDD) or Solid State Drive (SSD) technology to record video content. These drives are housed securely inside the Atomos Master Caddy that locks inside the Ninja. The drives are hot swappable, which means inserting new drives on the fly is a simple and fast process. Using tried and tested storage guarantees both performance and reliability with a 750GB drive holding 8 hours of high quality Apple ProRes footage and costs less than £100! Traditional (spinning) hard disk drives are for everyday use, in normal conditions, while solid-state (SSD) drives can be used when a more rugged and ultra-reliable recording media is required.
A Pipeline to the Timeline.
The Ninja's tight Apple ProRes integration means recorded footage is instantly and natively editable in Final Cut Pro 7, Final Cut Pro X, as well as software by Avid, Adobe and Sony on both Mac and PC. There is no need to waste time transcoding or converting from other camera formats, simply insert the Ninja Master Caddy in to the provided Master Caddy Dock that sports FireWire, USB and eSATA connections, and content is instantly ready to be edited directly off the Master Caddy, or copied/transfered to a direct-attached edit storage or a SAN/LAN.
Simple Operation. Portable Rugged Design.
The Ninja is simple to use, rugged and portable. There are no fiddly buttons, just a crisp, high-resolution touch screen monitor. Ninja has just FOUR main functions: Record, Stop, Monitor and Play, and the user interface is designed for one-touch operation with every function clearly visible and accessible. Ninja is small, light and tough, and designed to sit silently on or near the camera or camera operator. Made from lightweight, high-grade aluminium, the connectors, storage and batteries are all easily accessible with line level audio providing higher quality audio than most cameras offer, and a 1/4 headphone output allows for audio monitoring level adjustment. Ninja also includes a LANC loop too to ensure remote operation.
Continuous, Hot-Swappable Power.
Powering video devices on location or away from studio environments can be a problem so the Ninja has not just one battery but two, designed in a unique Active/Passive Dual Battery system that means users need never run our of juice on a shoot. When the active battery is depleted, Ninja automatically switched to the fully-charged passive battery. Swapping batteries on the fly is simple and does not affect operation meaning the depleted battery can be removed and exchanged for a charged spare.
