Glyph New FireWire Companion Designed Specifically for Digidesign's Mbox

Ithaca, NY - Glyph Technologies today announced immediate availability of its new Companion™ - a complete FireWire storage solution incorporating technological advances including S.M.A.R.T., composite metals and automatic thermal sensing cooling. The Companion is designed and engineered as the primary storage system for Digidesign's Mbox™ System. This new unit complements the Mbox in appearance and functionality, it also physically couples with the Mbox to maintain a small footprint. The Companion is a cost-effective portable solution for use on the tabletop of your micro studio. With the Companion, Glyph continues to deliver the latest technology in storage solutions for audio and video professionals.

The Companion is now shipping with capacities of 40GB, 80GB or 120GB. The power, cooling, interface and packaging systems are engineered to exacting specifications resulting in a fully optimized solution for audio production. The 7,200 RPM drive speed enables recording, editing and mixing of at least 24 tracks of 24 bit audio, allowing a single Companion to easily handle 140 to 420 minutes of audio at a sample rate of 48kHz. This is made possible by the our new ATA to IEEE1394 (FireWire) bridge boards designed by Glyph's engineering team with the ability to push the data ATA/100 (ATA-5) interface to its limit (50MB/sec) using the Oxford 911 chipset. Digidesign has specified the Oxford 911 chip for use with their systems. The S.M.A.R.T. functionality enables project studios to save valuable production time by detecting potential drive failures before they happen and allowing users to save files before they are lost. S.M.A.R.T. (Self-Monitoring, Analysis and Report Technology) is a technology designed and used to monitor and predict device performance.

Taking advantage of advanced composite metals technology, the Companion provides the best solution for noise and vibration control which Glyph has determined through extensive research and testing. The combination of viscoelastic damping and secure fastening with sturdy steel mounting hardware virtually eliminates vibrational noise.
