The Village Bulks Up With New Fibre Supplement

Glyph Technologies Storage Area Network Brings Efficiency to Village ProTools(r) Clients

[January 11. 2001] - West Los Angeles, CA - The Village has announced the completion of a state-of-the-art storage area network for ProTools (r) recording sessions. The largest system of its kind in the region, the new fiber optic network was designed and installed in partnership with Glyph Technologies at the renowned West Los Angeles studios.

"Although analog recording remains an important part of many clients' sound, 90% of our clients use ProTools to enhance and finish their projects," stated Village CEO, Jeff Greenberg. "Upgrading the Village with this network gives our ProTools clients fast connections, automatic backup and a huge amount of storage for their sessions, and it reduces the limitations associated with SCSI connections. Now we can offer simultaneous network access to multiple clients, ensuring the fastest and most reliable network access," he continued.

The new network is accessible from all four studios at the Village with three connections in each studio: control room, machine room and studio.

The Glyph Coba/SAN TM (Storage Area Network) includes a Petra 10TM Fibre Channel RAID, an eight-port Brocade Fabric Switch, and is managed via TranSoft Networks' FibreNet software, which offers a total of 108 gigabytes of high speed, redundant storage.

In the unlikely event of a hard drive failure, the data on the problematic drive will be regenerated on an on-line spare drive within the RAID so that no data will be lost, and there is no down-time on the network.

Given the advent of 24-bit and the pending adoption of 96K sample rates, the storage demands of a recording studio are growing rapidly and the Village's Coba/SAN system allows for application-specific scalability as storage and functional needs evolve.

"The Village has clearly raised the bar as a facility by now offering the most advanced digital recording tools and editing capabilities." said Steve Gorney, CEO of Glyph Technologies "By installing a Coba/SAN system for multiple Pro Tools rigs, the Village provides collaboration and speed benefits to session work that is world-class and was not possible 12 months ago."

Celebrating more than 30 years as a state-of-the-art recording and scoring facility in West Los Angeles, The Village is a four-room, 26,000-square-foot former Masonic Temple now serving the record, film, and television industries.
